Master Degree ( M.A.)

About Course Programme

The Master’s degree programme is an advanced level course in English literature and criticism, with provision for special papers. This is one of the few Departments in India offering Master’s level courses in Creative Writing and Film Studies. The M. Phil programme is a research level course comprising of literary theory, research methodology and theories of drama, poetry and fiction.

Creative Literature and American Literature special paper programmes are being taught at the M.A. level at present.

Course Tenure: Two years (Four semesters)

How to Enter into the Course Programme

The newspaper Advertisement for application for Admission is usually issued by the Chairman, P.G. Council, Berhampur University, in May every year.  In the University website also the details of the said advert is published along with a soft copy of the application as well as the prospectus.

The students are supposed to download a copy of the application and send the same along with specified enclosures to the Head of the Department.  Selection is made on the basis of career points and marks in B.A. taken together.

Curriculum / Syllabi

Objective: The curriculum and syllabus follow the National agenda of making Universities Centres of Excellence in research. It is meant for advanced readers in the field of English Literature in particular and World Literature in general with a view to helping them acquire

  • Skills in understanding the different cultures through their literature
  • Ability to develop a diachronic understanding of how the English language has been differently handled in different generations as well as different continents.
  • Greater ability to use the English language both professionally and personally in different phases of human experience.
  • Ability to understand and develop competence in English Language Teaching and Linguistics

Visualized Outcome:

  • With an enhanced worldview through literatures in English, the students can shape into great ambassadors of literary as well as cultural exchange on a global scale.
  • The course will help promote humanistic ideals while emphasizing the need for global peace and ecological well-being.
  • The course will help the students find placement in different sectors with expertise in English language and enlarged worldview.

Class Schedule

The weekly academic programme of the Department accommodates the following as part of the time table set during 10.30 A.M. – 4.30 P.M. everyday:

  1. Regular Classes
  2. Proctorial Classes
  3. Classroom paper-reading sessions
  4. Week-end Seminars
  5. Discussion
  6. Consultation on dissertation preparation.
  7. Guidance on Library and Reference

M.Phil

About Course Programme

The M.Phil. programme consists of THREE papers spread over Two semesters as per the details stated below:

SEMESTER ONE: (1st of January to 31st of June every year)

Theory Papers:

Paper I & Paper II each carrying 100 marks

SEMESTER TWO: (1st of July to 31st of December every year)

Paper III : dissertation carrying 100 marks

How to Enter into the Course Programme

The Chairman, P.G. Council issues an e-advertisement in the University website seeking application for admission to M.Phil.every year in the month of November/December.

The process of selection involves the following phases:

  1. Entrance Test
  2. Vive Voce Test of the candidate’s short-listed through the Entrance Test.
  3. The final selection shall take into consideration: Career Points, Teaching Experience, Publications

Ph.D.

About Course Programme

An advertisement seeking application for the Ph.D. programme is published in the website of the University from time to time.

The process of selection consists of the follwing phases:

 

  1. University Research Entrance Test
  2. Viva voce test for candidates sehort-listed throught the URET.
  3. If selected, the candidates will have to complete a coursework of SIX months.
