1.1 Master Degree (M.Sc. - Zoology)
M.Sc Zoology is 2years course programme with 24 seats, which constitutes 4 Semesters of 6 months duration each. At the end of each semester there is 1 End-semester examination consisting of 3 theory papers of 3 hours duration carrying 60 marks each and 1 practical examination of 6 hours durations carrying 100 mark. . There is 1 mid-semester examination carrying 15 marks for each theory paper.
Students’ intake is made strictly on merit basis taking the career and the marks secured in the qualifying examination into consideration.
In each semester there are 6 teaching days per week and for each theory paper there are 8 theory classes and 5 practical classes.
The Department of Biotechnology was initiated in the year 2005 at Berhampur University. It offers two year post graduate course in Biotechnology with major thrusts on Modern Biology, viz, Cell & Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioethics etc. The department also produced few M.Phil students. In research, the Department has mainly pursued its interest in Cytogenetics, Bioinformatics, Genotoxicity, Cytochemistry, Cell Physiology and Biochemistry, Sericulture, Vector Biology and Biology of ageing.
Any person who has passed the qualifying degree examination possessing B.Sc/B.Pharm./MBBS/B.V.Sc./ B.F.Sc./BE or B.Tech. in Bio-technology/B.Sc. Agr. with a minimum of 45% of marks in the aggregate or in the honours subject for the candidates belonging to the general category (a minimum of 40% of marks in the aggregate or a minimum of 45% in the honours subjects for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes) can enter into the course programme.
In each semester there are 6 teaching days per week.
It is one year programme with the session from January to December. The admitted students have to appear one theory examination consisting of two theory papers. Each student has to produce one dissertation containing the research output.
Admission into all M. Phil courses shall be done through an entrance test followed by an interview. The Test shall comprise of one paper of 100 marks (50 marks Objective Type Questions and 50 marks for short-answer type questions) of two hour duration. The Question Paper shall cover all the papers taught at the Post-Graduate level of the concerned subject of Berhampur University. The candidates should secure minimum 50% of marks in the entrance test (40% of marks for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) in order to be eligible to appear at the interview. The selection for admission into M.Phil. Courses shall be made on the basis of the career marks and the marks secured in the interview.
On each working day there shall be two theory classes and in the rest time the students shall work for their dissertations in the respective research laboratories and in the library.
There is one pre-Ph.D. course of six months duration. The syllabus, theory examination pattern are same to that of M. Phil course.
There shall be one URET examination conducted by the University, once each year. URET qualified candidates are required to appear one viva-voce test conducted by the department. The qualified candidates can admit into the pre-Ph.D. course, which is of six months duration, like that of M. Phil. Those who qualify in the pre-Ph.D. examination can go for registration for Ph. D.
