Overview Of Sports Council
Sports Council, Berhampur University was established in 1967. It takes pride in being the foremost promoter of sports in the South Odisha. It reiterates its commitment to promote participation, inclusion and excellence in sports at all levels. 'State Sports Grid' has been developed so that maximum number of students has access to use sports infrastructure uniformly throughout all colleges under the University. The physical activities and sports are integral parts of Berhampur University culture and society. Sports Council has its own building near the University playground. It is well equipped with Indoor games. It is headed by the Secretary, appointed by the Authority of the University. Football coach and supporting staffs are employed to assist the Secretary.
Aims and Objectives
The University aims to increase awareness among students regarding significant benefits of physical activities and the practice of sports. The Government will strive to ensure a scenario where right to fitness and right to play can be reasonably realized.

Details of Activities undertaken during June 2010-May 2015
The Sports Council has conducted all the Inter-College Tournaments as decided in the A.G.B. Meeting and also sent the University teams to participate in different Inter-University Tournaments.
The University has sent teams to participate in the Inter-Zone and All-India Tournaments/Meets/Competitions organised by different Universities under the auspices of the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi. The venue of different Inter-College Tournaments organised under the auspices of the Sports Council, Berhampur University and the Inter-University

Introduction
Established in 1967, the Sports Council, Berhampur University is the largest organization in the whole of South Orissa comprising of seven districts i.e. Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri & Kandhamal. There are 147 affiliated colleges under the Sports Council. The University has setup the Sports Council with the purpose of conducting Inter College Tournaments, preparing and Coaching of University teams for the Inter University Tournaments and to send teams for the East Zone/All India Inter University Tournaments. Berhampur University participates in Eighteen disciplines in the Inter University Tournaments for Men and Women.

Structure of the Sports Council
The Sports Council of Berhampur University consists of Principals of all affiliated Colleges, which meets at least once in a year. Two members from among the University employee/teachers are nominated to general body by the Vice-Chancellor. The general body of the Sports Council elects 6 members to the executive body to run the day to day activities. The Vice-Chancellor appoints a Secretary on part-time basis preferably from among the teachers of the University who functions in addition to his own duties. One of the technical persons of the Sports and Games is appointed as Assistant Secretary to assist the Secretary

The Nature of Work
The University sends the coach at its own cost to affiliated Colleges for imparting coaching to the students and prepares them for Inter College Tournaments. After the Inter College Tournaments are over the coach prepare the University Team for the Inter University Tournaments. As and when necessary the Sports Council requisitions the services of coaches from the State Government and Sports Authority of India (Central Government) for coaching the University teams. In the past years S.A.I. had appointed four of its coaches in the Games of Badminton, Hockey, Athletics and Weight-Lifting & Best Physique. Now all the four coaches were taken back to their parent department by the order of Central Government. The Sports Council organizes Inter College tournaments in all the eighteen event every year. Before sending the University team to participate in the Inter University tournaments the selected players in different Sports and Games are imparted coaching the Sports Council. This University participates in the Inter University Tournaments organized by Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi in eighteen disciplines, such as Athletics (Men & Women), Basketball (Men & Women), Badminton (Men & Women), Boxing, Cricket (Men & Women), Chess (Men & Women), Football, Hockey, Handball, Kabaddi (Men & Women), Kho-Kho (Men & Women), Table Tennis (Men & Women), Volleyball, Weight Lifting (Men & Women) & Best Physique.
Infrastructure inside and Outside
Sports Council has a good Multi-purpose Hall with 7 (Seven) big rooms which was sanctioned by the U.G.G. in the year 1985. In South Odisha, this is the only Indoor Badminton Court (Wooden) with a Hova Mat. The games like Table Tennis, Chess and Weight Lifting and Best physique are also conducted in this Hall. The Sports Council has 21 (Twenty One Station) Multigym inside the Gallery room.
The Sports Council has also a beautiful ground which facilitates conducting Cricket, Football, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Hockey, Handball, Athletics and all outer games etc. Two numbers of Basketball cemented courts are also available inside the ground.
Facilities for Training & Types of Training
Summer Coaching Camps in different disciplines are conducted every year. After the Inter University events are over, the Students were called to the coaching camp. Normally 12 to 15 days coaching camps are conducted in each game. Equipments are provided for different games during coaching camps.
Financial Position
The Sports Council is a self-financial organization which manages out of the fees collected from the Students of different affiliated Colleges @Rs.60.00 per student as Athletic & Rs. 100.00 as entry fees per event. The Budget is approved by the General Body of the Sports Council from the beginning of the academic session.
Grants
The Sports Council has received Rs. 6.5 lakhs for construction of Indoor Multipurpose Hall in the 1985 and also received Rs. 1.5 lakhs in the year 1987 and 1998 respectively towards purchase of Sports materials. The University also received a matching grant from Govt. of Odisha for construction of Sports Infrastructure.
Future Plan
This University has covers 9 (Nine) districts and most of the district are located in Tribal areas. There is no scope of Physical Education in the Tribal area. There is also no Physical Education Colleges under the Berhampur University. So we are planning to open a department of Physical Education in our University on the basis of self finance and the professional courses like Bachelor in Physical Education (B.P. Ed.), Master in Physical Education (M.P.Ed.). Hence the Physical Education can be popularised in the tribal areas.
We are also planning too open the Sports Hosted in the University Campus sponsored by the Sports Authority of India and State Government. So that, the talented University boys and girls could get the opportunity and build up their Sports Carrier and this University can able to produce the National and International Sports personal in different discipline.
