About Department
The Department of Economics was established in 1972 with two years Master Degree Course in Economics.Prof. Ghanashyam Dash was the founding head of the Department. In order to encourage research activities, the M. Phil. course was introduced in 1979-80. The department also offers Ph. D. and D.Litt. programmes under the supervision of the faculty members. The special papers offered by the Department are Mathematical Economics, Econometrics and Industrial Economics and Financial Institutions and Markets

Sudhakar Patra holds M.A degree in Applied Economics from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, M.Phil. degree from JNU, New Delhi, Ph.D. degree in Economics from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and is professor in the Department of Economics, Berhampur University. He has been teaching Economics since 1988 at various educational Institutions i.e., Sri Venkateswar College, Delhi University, Govt. College, Phulbani, N.C. College, Jajpur, Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Ravenshaw University, Cuttack and Berhampur University, Berhampur. He has completed 4 research projects funded by South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) and University Grants Commission. Seven research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. under his guidance. He has participated in 20 international and 48 national/regional conferences/seminars/Workshops. He is life member of 15 professional Associations/Societies including The Indian Econometric Society(TIES), Indian Economics Association(IEA), Indian Society of labour Economics(ISLE), Indian Society of Agricultural Economics(ISAE).He has published 20 books, 42 papers in peer reviewed International Journals and 52 papers in National Journals and 38 book chapters in edited books. He has successfully guided 12 scholars for Ph.D and 18 scholars for M.Phil. He has 13 times academic visit to different foreign countries including Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. He acts as Director, IQAC and Coordinator. IDP (World Bank) in Berhampur University. He is a member of NAAC Peer Team and visited various institutions �for NAAC assessment and accreditation.

Dr. Swain has obtained his M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He has qualified UGC (NET) and was awarded ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship at NKC Centre for Development Studies, Bhubaneswar. He has more than 18 years of teaching and research experience at reputed institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun; Sardar Patel University (SPU), Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat; Khallikote University, Berhampur, ICFAI University; ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneswar and NKC Centre for Development Studies, Bhubaneswar (ICSSR). His areas of research interest include Agricultural and Resource Economics, Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations, Rural Finance, Food Security and Sustainable Development, Gender Studies and Energy Studies. He has completed 23 research projects funded by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India; Planning Commission, GoI; World Bank; ICSSR New Delhi, Gujrat Govt., DST-GoI, IASRI New Delhi, NDDB Anand, CIPT, Columbia Water Centre etc. He has Published 04 books, 66 research papers in refereed journals and edited books and has contributed 72 research papers to national and international conferences. He has organised 07 seminars/conferences/workshops and has chaired many sessions as the resource persons. He has worked as a member of the Editorial Boards of 06 research journals and as a reviewer for several journals (22) published by Springer, Elsevier, Taylor and Francis (Routledge), Wiley-Blackwell etc. He has guided 01 M.Phil. and 06 Ph.D. students and 28 MBA students. Dr. Swain was the recipient of Sardar Patel Research Award, 2018 from the Governor of Gujarat for the best research paper under the category of Agricultural and Social Sciences at S. P. University; V. S. Vyas Felicitation Prize three times consecutively (2012-2013, 2014-2015 and 2016-2017) for the best research reports. He was also the recipient of the Research Grant under India - Thailand Bilateral Programme and visited Thailand during 2019. Besides, he has ample experiences in academic administration. He works as the Director, Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSEIP) and the Coordinator, AIU-Academic and Administrative Development Centre (AADC) at Berhampur University. He acted as Director, IQAC; Director, CDC; Director, HRDC; Coordinator, RUSA; Coordinator. IDP (World Bank); Head of the Department of Economics and Management; Dean, School of Management and Business Studies; Development Officer; Nodal Officer, 12B; and Syndicate Member of erstwhile Khallikote University Berhampur. He was elected as the Vice-President, South Odisha Economic Association for 2022-23. He is a life member of many professional Associations/Societies including TIES, IEA, ISAE, ISAM, TSED, OEA SOEA etc.

Dr. BishnuCharan Behera did his Ph.D. degree from Berhampur University. He has qualified UGC-NET in the year 2006. He is working as Assistant Professor in the department since 2010. He has published about 22 articles in different National and International repute journals and edited books. He has more than 12 years of P.G. teaching experience. His research areas are Poverty, Financial Institutions and Markets and Development Economics. He is a member of Odisha Commerce Association and Indian Economic Association.�He worked as Coordinator, P.G. Department of Economics from June 2020 to May 2022; Asst. Superintendent, Jogendra Hostel, MT Ladies Hostel and Nagabali Boy�s Hostel. He also acted as NSS Programme Officer for the academic session 2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14 &2015-16 at Berhampur University. Dr. Diptimayee Mishra has joined the Department of Economics of Berhampur University as Assistant Professor in June 2018. Her PhD is from Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, in the year 2015. She holds M.A in Analytical and Applied Economics�from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and M.Phil. from Sambalpur University, Sambalpur. She has cleared UGC-NET for Lectureship. She started her carrier as a Lecturer in Talcher Autonomous College, Talcher under the Department of Higher Education, Odisha in October 2016. During her research carrier she has attended more than twenty National and International Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and Faculty Development Programmes. She has visited abroad to Singapore to attain Conference and present her paper. She has published about nine articles in various National and International reputed Journals. Her research interests are Socio-economic Impacts of Climate Change-Vulnerability analysis in particular, Environmental Economics and Macro Economics. Her preferred areas of teaching are Micro Economics, Mathematical Economics, Quantitative Techniques, Econometrics and Environmental Economics.

Dr. Bibhunandini Das joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Berhampur University on June 20, 2022. Prior to joining Berhampur University, she has worked with Indian Institute of Public Health, Bhubaneswar (2013-14); Public Health Foundation of India, New Delhi(2014-15) and Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM) (2015-2022).Dr Bibhunandini Das has obtained her BA, MA and MPhil degrees in Economics from Ravenshaw College (now University) under Utkal University. She has obtained her PhD from the Centre for Development Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2015.Dr Das teaches Economics, Business Statistics and Quantitative Techniques. Her areas of research are Diffusion of Innovation and its impact on economic development, agricultural economics and economics of education.

The Department is providing computing facilities to the students and research scholars using Econometrics softwares like LimDep, Gretle, E-Views and Statistical softwarse like SPSS and Strata.

The Department has a full-fledged computer laboratory with 05 Desktop Computers, O3 printers with wi-fi internet facilities to the students and scholars.

The department is functioning in the ground floor of 2nd Humanities Block with one HOD room, 3 class rooms, one seminar hall, one office room, one Departmental library, two computer rooms,5 faculty rooms and three toilets.
