About Department

The Department is established in the year 1968 and offers two year Master's degree course in History with specializations in Ancient Indian History, Medieval Indian History and Modern Indian History. Department has also been offering M.Phil and Ph.D. programme in regular mode. Padma Shri K. C. Panigrahi was the first head of the Department and Head of the Heads (Chairman, PG Council). The M.Phil course designed to provide theory and practical knowledge of research work in History was introduced in 1979-80. One-year course in Tourism and Indian Monuments [DTIM] was introduced in 1984 as first of its kind in the state. Only Post-Graduates in History, Culture & Archaeology are eligible to seek admission into the course (DTIM). This course is unique in India in the field of Tourism and Monuments and imparts instructions on different aspects of Tourism and Monuments of India in general and Odisha in particular with field study and destination oriented practical course.

The Department has Archival Cell which contains a large number of Gazetteers, Reports, journals, magazines, Odia literature, Proceedings, Private Papers, Text books of recent trends, and Rare Books relating to history, laws, medicine, religion, politics, science, art and culture. The reference section caters to the needs of scholars who utilize the materials preserved in the Archival Cell.

Highly committed teachers have been engaged in teaching and research in various fields in general and regional history in particular since the inception of the Department. In recognition to the academic achievements of the department the UGC has sanctioned the Special Assistance Programme (at DRS level) to the department from the academic session 1999-2000. The Department has successfully completed Phase-I and Phase-II level and the UGC has upgraded the SAP, from Phase-II to Phase-III level further for a period of five years i.e. from 01.04.2009 to 31.03.2014. The UGC has also sanctioned the ASIHSS program in addition to SAP, for its achievement in the first phase of SAP for a period five years from 2006-07.

The Department has been organizing National, International and State Level Seminars, conducting Refresher Courses/Conferences/Workshops from time to time. The teachers of the Department have earned International fame by visiting foreign countries as Visiting Fellow/Professor and participating in International Seminars and Conferences at regular intervals. The faculty members have been associated with the U.G.C., the U.P.S.C., different State P.S.Cs and such other prestigious organizations at national and state levels. Further, the teachers have been taking up academic assignments as Resource Persons and Visiting Professors of different universities.

Besides these, the department was also publishing a bi-annual research journal entitled Studies in History and Culture (ISSN: 0971-9326) of international standard since 1993. Since 2006-07, the Department is publishing a yearly edited volume, Studies on Orissan History under the ASIHSS programme. During the last several years the departmental activities in the fields of teaching and research have increased considerably. In 2018 department has completed 50 years and celebrated Golden Jubilee year by organizing Distinguished Lecture Series and honoring and felicitating the former faculties of the department. The First International Seminar (ICH 1.0) was organized by the Department in February 2020 under the World Bank Project. Department has also organized its first History Alumni Meet (HAM -I) in 2020

Programme

About Course Programme

The Department of History was established in 1968 with two years Master Degree Course in History. In order to encourage research activities the M.Phil. Course was introduced in 1979-80. The department also offers Ph.D. programme under the supervision of the faculty members.

The Post Graduate curriculum is reoriented in consonance with modern development as per the guidelines of U.G.C. Though the emphasis remains on strengthening Historical Knowledge of the students topics on History of Science and Technology, Historiography, Contemporary world, Regional History are introduced in the Curriculum of the History. The Department offers three Specializations to students in the Second year mainly

i) Ancient Indian History
ii) Medieval Indian History and
iii) Modern Indian History

The Department also offers a course as Tourism and Indian Monuments. The duration of the course is one year. Any students who completed MA in History/ Archaeology/ Indian Culture are eligible for admission.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

Department of Higher Education, Govt of Odisha has been conducting Common PG Entrance Test (CPET/2020 onwords) for PG admission into various Universities and Colleges in the State. Under SAM portal HE is inviting application for the MA in History and other subjects, annually. MA course consists of four semesters.

M.Phil

The course shall be of one year duration comprises of two semesters.

About Course Programme

The M.Phil. programme in History consists of THREE papers spread over Two semesters as per the details stated below:

SEMESTER ONE: (1st of January to 31st of June every year)

Theory Papers:

Paper I & Paper II each carrying 100 marks

SEMESTER TWO: (1st of July to 31st of December every year)

Paper III : dissertation carrying 100 marks

How to Enter into the Course Programme

The Chairman, P.G. Council issues an e-advertisement in the University website seeking application for admission to M.Phil.every year in the month of November/December.

The process of selection involves the following phases:

1) Entrance Test
2) Vive Voce Test of the candidate's short-listed through the Entrance Test.
3) The final selection shall take into consideration the follwing:
a) Career Points
b) Teaching Experience
c) Publications

Dr. Sadananda Nayak, Reader, holds a Ph.D. degree from Berhampur University, Berhampur, Odisha. He has 17 years of teaching experience since 1999. He has joined as a Reader in the Department in March, 2016. Earlier, he was teaching at Sambalpur University as a Lecturer. His research interest includes Regional History, Dalit Christian History and Socio-cultural history. He has guided 9 M. Phil. students and guiding doctoral students. He has published 3 books and 40 articles in various International and National Journals. He has more than 30 papers presented in different Seminars with various aspects of History and interdisciplinary subjects. He is a member of Indian History Congress, South India History Congress, Odisha History Congress and Institute for Social Development and Research (Ranchi).

Dr. Ramakanta Bhuyan was the product of the Berhampur University. He was qualified UGC NET on 2011 and appointed in the Department. He was holding his Ph.D from Berhampur University. He has 4 years of Research and Teaching experience in the Department. He is the member of Indian History Congress, South Indian History Congress and Odishan History Congress. He has published many research articles in various Journals. His interest areas of Research are Incient Indian History, Tribal Studies, social and cultural History and Regional History.

Sankarsan Malik has received his M.A., Mphil and P.hD in History from the University of Hyderabad. He has been teaching in Department of History, Berhampur University since 2016. His research interests are in Women's History, 18th century studies, Cultural History of Odisha.

The Department has Archive and Library with a unique and rare collection of more than 12000 important books and more than 11000 Text and research books. Library is well equipped with furniture and digital devices such as projectors, computers, and audio sets for teaching learning activities. Department Library has hundreds of back volumes and proceedings of Indian History Congress and reputed journals (The Indian Economics and social history review, Bengal past and present, Quarterly review of history, Medieval history journal , studies in history, The journal of Orissan history, Calcutta historical journal, The Orissa historical research journal, Indian archives, the journal of historical and social analyses, south Indian history congress, Epigraphia Indica, Orissa dist. Gazetteers, Glory of India, etc).
