Department of Industrial Relations & Personnel Management
The Department of Industrial Relations & Personnel Management has established in the year 1967 and the unique distinction of being the first teaching department of the university besides being first of its kind in the State of Orissa. The changes brought about in its course structure and its nomenclature from Labour and Social Welfare to Industrial Relations and Labour Welfare and then to Industrial Relations and Personnel Management justify its vision that it changes with the changing times. It imparts instructions and practical skills in the fields of Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management and Development, Labour Legislation, Labour Welfare, and Organizational Behaviour. To equip its students with latest developments in the areas of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, the department has introduced courses in International Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, Organizational Change and Development.
The Department offers two years master's degree and one year M. Phil degree courses. It is a recognized institution for pursuing doctoral research. It is the pioneer in examination reforms in terms of introducing semester and mid-semester examinations incorporating a system of continuous evaluation and feedback. As the Department offers professional course, the learning pedagogy used includes theoretical instructions, case analysis, seminar presentations, and management games. Field- work internship has been the main stay of the department since its inception for providing practical training to the students.

The Department has a consistently good placement record. Every year on an average about 50 per cent of its products get placed in different organisations both Public and Private sectors.

M.A. in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management
About Course Programme

As the Department offers professional course, the learning pedagogy used includes theoretical instructions, case analysis, seminar presentations, and management games. How to Enter into the Course Programme
For admission into M. A. (I.R & P.M.) course, the Admission is based on the marks secured in all examinations starting from HSC, +2 and Degree basing upon the aggregate percentage of marks. The Department may also hold an entrance examination for admission purpose. The duration of such test is normally 2 hours. Questions in the entrance examination include objective type questions comprising of multiple questions from General English, GK, Aptitude Tests and from the subject of IRPM. The admissions are held by the Department normally in the month of May-June. Apart from the marks secured in the Admission test the academic career of the applicant is given weightage for considering admission.
The total number of seats is 36 of which 13% reserved for ST ; 9.5% for SC and 1 seat for Physically challenged, 1 seat for Sports (National / University ) level participation.
Class Schedule
Classes are held on the campus during all working days from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Apart from the theory classes weekly seminars are held regularly. As a part of the course curriculum the students are required to undergo a practical training (internship/field study) for a period of 1 month normally in the month of June before the commencement of 3rd Semester theory classes commence. On the basis of the field study the students are required to submit a project report during the 4th Semester.
M. Phil (I.R & P.M )Programme
About Course Programme
The Research courses in IR&PM is M.Phil and Ph.D . The objective of the Reserach course is to provide students with necessary skills to identify and research complex issues in the field of IR & PM . the Course seeks candidates with outstanding academic backgrounds, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contribution.
The M. Phil programme in I.R & P.M. is of one year duration (Calendar Year). The programme is offered during every calendar year commencing from the month of January. There are twelve seats in the programme including two seats reserved for ST candidates , and 1 seat reserved for SC candidate.
A candidate who has passed the M. A. (I.R & P.M.) Degree of this university or any other examination recognized as equivalent by Berhampur University , with at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade (50% of marks for ST/SC candidates) is eligible to apply for the programme.
The course comprises of course work (instruction on the theory papers) and dissertation. Clearing of all the theory papers in the course work is a pre-condition for evaluation of the dissertation. The total course fee for the programme is presently Rs. 6095/-.
How to Enter into the Course Programme
The Notification for the M. Phil programme is normally announced in the month of September. The application form along with the prospectus can be downloaded from the University website (www.buodisha.edu.in)
The admission into the M. Phil is done through an entrance test followed by a viva-voce test . The Entrance Test comprise of one paper of 100 marks (50 marks objective type questions and 50 marks short answer type questions both relating to the subject of I.R & P.M.) of two hour duration. In order to be eligible to appear at the Interview. the candidate should qualify in the Entrance Test. The selection into the M. Phil course is made on the basis of career marks and the marks secured in the interview as detailed below:

Ph.D
About Course Programme
Ph.D is a research course. Students are selected through URET/UGC-NET/UGC-JRF, the Dept. provides an excellent environment for carrying out advanced research, thus creating highly committed researchers trained in the most recent methodologies and engaged in producing original research work.
BU doctoral programme provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary education and research. The small entering class ensures close interaction with the faculty, where students can determine their own directions under the guidance of their thesis advisory committees.
Students spend generally a little over four years that includes course work. Course work in the first year provides a HR management/Research methodology overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced doctoral level courses in their areas of specialization. The doctoral dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines.
Department if IR&PM faculty have studied and worked in the best of institutions within India and around the world. Their involvement with public and private organizations internationally allows them to bring relevant research issues into the classroom and in their research. This creates an exceptional environment for developing a research programme that can build sound theory for analyzing complex managerial problems.
The Department offers Doctoral programme in IPRM. Candidates seeking admission into the Doctoral course are required to possess an M. A. Degree in I.R. & P.M. with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate. Candidates so qualified for the Research programme have to undergo a six-months course work and clear the same by securing at least 50% marks in each paper in order to become eligible to apply for registration. A synospsis relating to the research problem on which the candidate intends to work for his/her thesis has to be submitted along with the duly filled in application for registration. The criteria for award of the Ph. D degree include submission of the Doctoral Thesis. The thesis is usually assessed by a Committee of examiners appointed by the university, and followed by a viva-voce examination. The minimum time required for submission of the thesis is two years normally.

The department accommodates research scholars from candidates qualifying in UGC NET/JRF candidates and also the URET (University Research Entrance Test) conducted by the University from time to time.

Dr. Itishree G. Kumari has joined the Department of Industrial Relations and Personne... M.Phil. and Masters Degree in PM&IR from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. She has cleared UGC-NET for Lectureship. She started her carrier as an Ad-hoc Faculty in The School of Management Studies, NIT Calicut, Kerla in December, 2017. During her research carrier she has attended more than fifteen National and International Conferences, Seminars and Workshops. She has visited abroad to Abu Dhabi to attain Conference and present her paper. She has also visited Bhutan, for a workshop. She has also published about 3 articles in various National and International reputed Journals. Her research interest areas are Human Resources Flexibility, Industrial Relations and Business Ethic, Human Capital, Emotional Intelligence, Human Resource Effectiveness, Leadership & Teamwork, Employee empowerment, Managerial Effectiveness, Stress and Conflict Management etc.
Facilities
The Dept. has a fully-furnished computer laboratory with audio-visual aids. AV aids are used during Seminars, conferences and special classes of the department.
Seminar Library
The Department is planning to procure a good number of text books for the seminar library, besides the existing stock of reference books.
Computing
The Department makes use of computing facility including other social science software packages centrally provided by the university for students, researchers and teachers.
Laboratories
The Department has a full-fledged computer laboratory equipped with latest learning aids like interactive board, LCD Projector, Desktop Computers, Printers, photocopiers, scanners and high bandwidth internet connection to cater to the needs of the students and faculty members.
Student Project Work
As per the course curriculum, the students in their third semester are sent for summer internship for a period of one month to different industrial establishments located both inside and outside the state of Odisha. During this period, the students are required to study the practices relating to different aspects of Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, Organisational Behaviour, etc. After the completion of internship, the students are required to submit their project reports.
Study Tour
The Department organizes a study tour of the students during the 4th semester of every academic year. Under the leadership of the FWI and a Faculty member the student visit different industries. In consultation with the industry people, the study tour is planned in the industrial belts of the country. Such tours provide educative interactive sessions with the industry people and provides them practical inputs regarding the HR profession.
The recent study tour of the Department was organized in Aurangabad (Maharastra) and Hyderabad from 8-17 January, A team of 30 students and two faculty members accompanied the team to different industries in and around Aurangabad: The organizations visited at Aurangabad were: Skoda Ltd. (An Automobile Industry); Siemens Ltd. (an MNC The Engine Boggie Division), Greaves Cotton (An Manufacturing Establishment in the Engineering Industry), Endurance Technologies Ltd. (An Automotive Division, a sister concern of Bajaj Auto. Ltd.).
The industries visited in and around Hyderabad were: (1) Aradhana Foods Juices Ltd. (A unit of Pepsi Co. Ltd.) and Mylan Unit-7 (An MNC in the Pharmaecutical sector).

Research Area in the Department
Research Area in the Department: The faculty members of the Department are actively engaged in research. The various fields in which the research work is being undertaken are: Human Resource Management, IR, OB, HRD etc.
Publication / Achievement / Credentials
The faculty members of the Department have published around 100 research papers in reputed research journals and edited books.
The department takes pride in its ability for facilitating the students in finding placements in organizations both public and Private sectors. As such, the percentage of placements is substantially increasing the years. At least 40% of the students, after completion of the studies, find immediate placements as compared to 20% placement in the past.
Dr. B. P. Rath , Professor of the Department was awarded "Outstanding Research Award" for his paper titled, "Influence of organizational Culture on Organisational Citizenship Behaviour" organised by IBFR (Global) held at Las Vegas, Neveda

Prof. D. V. Giri attended the 12th World Congress of the International Industrial Relations, Association held at Tokyo, Japan in the year 2000.
Prof. B. P. Rath attended an International Conference organized by the Institute for Business and Finance Research held at Las Vegas , Neveda during January 2-5 , 2011 and presented a paper titled, "Influence of Organisational Culture on Organisational Citizenship Behaviour: A Three-Sector Study".

INDUSTRY-INSTITUTION-INTERFACE MEETING
Conducted a joint ISTD and Department of IRPM Berhampur University on 13 may 2022 to discuss regarding Industry-Institution -Interface meeting along with General Body Meeting has also unanimously decided to nominate Dr.BiBHUTI Mahapatro,Dr Sharada Prasad Sahoo as president and secretary of ISTD Berhampur Chapter.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PERSPECTIVES ON EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS 22-23 DECEMBER 2012
The P. G Department of IR&PM and the IR&PM Alumni Association organized a Two day National Conference on "Perspectives on Employment Relations" and organized Alumni meet on 23rd Dec 2012. The Sub themes of the Conference included areas like:
The conference was attended by around 200 Delegates, Academicians, Research Scholars and professionals from both Public and Private sector organisations across the country. Most of the delegates participated in the deliberations and presented their research papers. All these research papers were compiled in a souvenir , which was released by the Chief Guest Mr. Balaswamy Akala, former CMD Coal India Ltd. and Prof. J. K. Mohapatra, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of the University in the inaugural function of the Conference.
Hon. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jayanta Kumar Mohapatra hailed the Departmental members for organizing such a conference of national importance. Throwing light on the present day industrial Relations scenario he urged upon the actors of Industrial relations to work in harmony for the overall growth of the country. Further, he highlighted the importance of Research in the emerging areas in Employment Relations. Prof G.C Patro, Former Head of the Dept of I.R. & P.M., Berhampur University delivered the keynote address. Prof D.V. Giri, Organizing secretary of the Conference welcomed the dignitaries and delegates of the conference and introduced the theme of the conference. Prof. B. P. Rath , Registrar, Berhampur University and also Secretary of the I.R. & P.M. Alumni Association, BU proposed a vote of thanks.
The Conference started with a panel discussion on "Perspectives on Employment Relations", with Prof. G. C. Patro as the moderator. Sri Ashok Kumar Sahu, GM (HR), NALCO , Shri, Parafulla Chandra Patnaik, Former President, Bank Emplyoyee's Federation and a Trade Union leader, Dr. R.K.Dash DGM (HR), L&T Works, Kansbahal , Odisha and ,Shri Sanathan Biswal, a Labour Law Practioner in Rourkela participated in the discussions. In total three technical sessions were held (Two on 22 December, 2012 and one on 23 December, 2012) in which the participants presented their research papers. The valedictory function was held in the afternoon of 23 December, 2012. Prof. B. C. Choudhury , Chairman , P. G. Council , BU and Director, College Development Council , BU presided over the function. Sri Vinay Kumar, former Director (Personnel) NTPC was the chief Guest. Prof. S.C. Parida proposed vote of thanks.

IRPM ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
The alumni association of the department of IRPM is a rich asset of the University. It involves graduates of all age groups of the yester years. The IRPM Deptt. Alumni Association serves as a strong network for both the students and faculty members of the Department. Additionally, it has always supported the new alumni, and provided a forum to form new friendships and business relationships with both students and faculties of the department.
Alumni Meet 2012
The PG Department of IR&PM along with its Alumni Association organized a Two day National Seminar on "Perspectives on Employment Relations" during 22-23 December, 2012 . The Alumni Association of the Deptt. Organized an Alumni Meet on 23 December 2012 after completion of the National Conference, with Prof. B.C. Choudhry gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.. Besides actively participating in the deliberations of the conference, the alumnus shared in reminiscence their student days to their journey into their work life and some even shared their experience in their post-retirement life.
Among the alumni were present Prof. G. C. Patro, Prof B.P. Rath, Prof D.V Giri , Prof. S. C. Parida , Dr. S. B. Patro and Dr. (Mrs. ) Anuva Choudhury, all faculty members of the department. Prof.B.C Choudhury with around 150 alumni present. They have shared their experiences and interacted with faculty and students
On this occasion Alumni Association felicitated its Alumni who have excelled and made their mark in their Professional Career brought pride and laurels to the Alamamater.
