About Department

Introduction :

The establishment of the Department in 1974 marks the beginning of Journalism education in the State of Odisha. It offered teaching for Bachelors degree in Journalism. In 1977 nomenclature was changed to Bachelor of Journalism & Mass Communication. Further, 2 Years Masters degree course M.J.M.C. was restructured in 2000 and the semester system of examination as per U.G.C. guidelines was introduced in 2002. At present the Department offers teaching for 4 semester Master's degree examination leading to award of the degree in M.A. (Mass Communication).

During past 40 years, the Department has produced above 1000 alumni and about 60% are employed in Media organisations such as newspapers, radio and television channels, government public sector and Public Relation organisations, advertising agencies, non-government organisations and academics.

Master Degree (M.A.)

About Course Programme

Two year full time masters' degree course is designed as per UGC guide lines. The Course prepares students for careers in various traditional and New Media for reporting, editing, television and radio programme production, advertising, public relation and Social Communication. Total number of students intake capacity is 24 including reservations as per UGC / State Government guidelines.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% (45% for ST/SC) marks in the major / honors subject or Aggregate can apply for admission. The admission process starts during the later part of May every year. The selection for admission is usually judged considering the career marking of individual applicants.

Curriculum is specially designed for Journalism and Mass Communication aspirants to make a career in myriad areas of Mass Media and Communication &Research. It aims to impart comprehensive training for various professionals in print, radio, television, internet, Public relations and advertising.

Class Schedule

Class Room teaching offered 6 days a week between 11 AM to 4.30 PM. Every day this includes theory, practical classes and seminars and field experiments.

Ph.D.

About Course Programme

As per the new regulations, scholars seeking registration for Ph.D. in Journalism & Mass Communication have to complete course work of one semester duration and pass the Pre-PhD examination. After being successful in the Pre-Ph.D examination, one can apply for registration for Ph.D.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

Candidates have to appear University Research Entrance Test (URET) to be eligible for admission in the Ph.D course work. Applicants who have qualified NET conducted by UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC like SLET/SET can be exempted from URET. Final Selection of the candidate will be done through personal interview by the selection committee.

Course Schedule

The Curriculum contains two papers of 100 Marks. The Course will help the student in gaining knowledge in research methodology and practical applications of research methods in Social Science. It will also help the students to have an extensive grasp of the contemporary issues and developments relating to Communication, media and society.

D.Litt.

About Course Programme

D.Litt. programme is designed for the candidates having Ph.D. in the subject.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

After 3 years of obtaining Ph.D. degree with 3 published research papers of high standard a candidate can apply for registration for D.Litt. examination for further details refer D.Litt. brochure available for sale along with the application for registration at the University Stores.

Prof.(Dr) Ganesh Sethi is currently a Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Berhampur University, Odisha. He joined the university on 16th March 2022, before he was serving as Associate Professor at Manipur University from 10th January 2020. He joined Manipur University as Assistant Professor on 1st February 2008. He has completed his M.A. in Political science in1997, MJMC in1999, LLB in 2002 and PhD in 2006 from Berhampur University. His area of interest and subjects currently teaching are Media laws and ethics, Advertising and Public Relations, Development communication and communication research. His area of specialization in Electronic Media.

Dr. Bandita Kumari Panda is serving as Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Berhampur University, Odisha. She joined Khallikote University in 2018. At present, she teaches Media Commercial, Film Studies, Radio Production, Print Journalism and her area of interest are Advertising, Social Media, Cinema, Online Media, Audio Visual Production, Gender studies and Educational media. Prior to this, she has served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Sciences, Anna University, Chennai for fourteen years and she holds PhD from the same institution. Also had a brief stint with Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Chennai. She started her career in entertainment programmes of Eenadu TV, Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. She had received the Royal Dutch NUFFIC fellowship and had been trained at the Netherlands. She has attended international and national conferences alike and have presented research papers. For this, she has visited the U.S.A., Europe and Australia.

Dr. Panda is a journalist turned media educator with full of passion for teaching and research. His goal is to be a highly responsible and research-driven academician, where he can utilize his buoyant spirit of professional experience, teaching skill, and research expertise. Further he envisioned to work on four dimensions, including Self-Development, Team Development, Student Development, and Institutional Development. He has done his Doctorate and Master in Journalism & Mass Communication from Berhampur University, Odisha. He has rich experience of more than 22 years in academia and media industries. Out of which he spent more than a decade over time in renowned media industries and 11 years in reputed Universities across India. He has worked for well-known media houses like ETV News (Now News18), and STV Samachar. Similarly, he served reputed academic institutes like, Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal, Lovely Professional University, Punjab, IMS Unison University, Dehradun, Amity University Madhya Pradesh and Ravenshaw University (as a visiting faculty).� He has directed and produced number of news shows, investigative stories and documentaries during his tenure in media Industry. He has published 15 research papers in National / International repute journals, UGC-CARE and peer reviewed journals and presented 22 research papers in various International & National conferences in India and Aboard. He has also published several book chapters and participated more than 30 international / national conference/ seminars. He has received the Excellence in Research Award for Best Researcher of the Year 2017-18 from Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal. He has successfully completed research project titled "Strengthening Human Resources, Legal Framework and Institutional Capacities Building to implement Nagoya Protocol" in collaboration with UNDP, National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), and The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru under UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project. He has attended six workshops organized by UGC, UNICEF, UNDP & Data Leads and also joined as a resource�s person in different workshops. He has organized several international and national conferences, seminars, media festival in the capacity of Organizing Secretary, Convenor, and Festival Director. He has done number of Short-Term Courses from University of Wollongong, Australia, Knight Center for Journalism, University of Texas, USA. He has successfully completed UGC-Sponsored Refresher Course in Mass Communication & Media Technology from Kurukshetra University and undergone 18 Faculty Development Programme / Short Term Training Programme on varied teaching and research related topics. During his academic journey, he has handled administrative tasks such as Head of the Department, Chairman of BOS, Member of Academic Council, Program Coordinator, Research Coordinator, Placement In-Charge in various Universities in India. He has successfully discharged his duty as an Editor and Associated Editor of reputed Research Journals in different Universities. Till date, he has guided 28 Dissertation Project at the Post-Graduate level and supervising Five Ph.D. Scholars. He is the member of �International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR)". He is actively involved in Curriculum Design, Developing Innovative Teaching Methods, Internship and Placement Assistance & Training Programs for different Universities. Mr. Agni Kumar Behera has completed his masters programme in Mass Communication from Pondicherry University. Currently he is pursuing his Ph.D degree at Pondicherry University in the Dept. of Electronic Media & Mass Communication in Film Studies. His specialization lies in film studies, video production, digital photography, semiotics and visual culture. Prior to joining Berhampur University, he was working as an Assistant Professor in Khallikote University in the Dept. of Mass Communication & Media Technology from 2018 to 2021.

Dr. Neha Pandey is working as an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication since Oct, 2021. She has successfully completed her Integrated MA and PhD degree in Mass Communication subject from Central University of Jharkhand. She has qualified the National Eligibility Test for Junior Research Fellowship conducted by UGC. Prior to joining Berhampur University, she has served Khallikote University from June, 2018- Sept, 2021. As a part of her academic career, she has attended more than twenty research conferences/seminars/workshops related to Communication for Development, Research Methodology workshops, Hands-on Training in Statistical Tools, R, Python, Film Workshops, Course Design, Development and Delivery workshops for acquiring knowledge. She has more than 6 publications to her credit so far. She have also done internship in many electronic news media channels as well as PR Dept. for getting first-hand industry experience.

Dr. Chinu Bohidar is working as an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication since March, 2022. She has successfully completed MA in Journalism and Mass Communication and PhD degree in Mass Communication from Berhampur University. Prior to joining Berhampur University, She has served as Head of the Department and Assistant Professor of School of Media and Communication of Centurion University of technology and Management, Odisha, from 1st October 2019 � March 2022. She has served as visiting faculty for NMIMS Hyderabad. She has also worked as Assistant Professor in AAFT (Asian Academy of Film and Television) Film City Noida, and BLS Institute of Technology and Management, under Indraprastha University New Delhi. Apart from academic she has more than 6 years of media industry experience in Kanak TV as Reporter and as Anchor cum Assistant Bulletin Producer in MBC TV the leading channel of Odisha. As a part of her academic career, She has attended and organised more than twenty-five research conferences/seminars/workshops related to Communication, virtual learning, Film Making, Radio, Course Design, Development and workshops for acquiring knowledge. She has more than 10 publications to her credit so far.

Mr Sourav Prakash Shit has completed his masters programme in Mass Communication from Birla Global University. Currently he is pursuing his Ph.D degree at Utkal University in the Dept. Journalism & Mass Communication. His specialization lies in film studies, video production, digital photography, new media and Artificial intelligence in Media. Prior to joining Berhampur University, he was working as an Assistant Professor (contractual) in Fakir Mohan University in the Dept. of Journalism & Mass Communication from 2018 to 2020.

Computing

Air Conditioned Computer Laboratory with Internet facility and non-linear editing suite for multimedia production classes. The students learn the technical skills of post production in Video. The students are also taught the skills of sound recording and editing in the laboratory.

Laboratories

A Multimedia Laboratory fitted with Public Address System. The students run a Narrowcasting community Radio News Bulletin "Bhanja Bani" wherein they learn the skills of gathering news, preparing and presenting for Radio broadcasting. A conference cum preview theater is under construction which will be ready by January 2015.

Student Project Work

Project work is a part of the Curriculum. During Semester IV students are required to produce a dissertation which carries 100 Marks. They are also required to produce media products in print/Audio/Video/Web-based media which carries 100 Marks. All the students undergo 4 weeks of Internship at a select media organization which also carries 100 Marks.

Research

The imparted research skills prepare the student for a position as a research analyst or research scholar and academician in such fields as advertising, marketing communication research, public relations, political campaigning, health communication, and international communication, etc. It combines a command of applied research designs, techniques, and writing skills. The Department has a range of active researchers who are focused on contemporary and historical analysis of journalism, news production, developmental journalism and political communication etc. The department also has active research links and collaborative research ventures with departments of other institutions in India and abroad.

Events

  • Department released Bhanja Bihar Reporter, a lab journal of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication during the 19th Convocation of Berhampur University.
  • Department organised a class seminar on Photojournalism, Prof. Mrinal Chatterjee from IIMC, Dhenkanal delivered a lecture during the Seminar.
