About Department
The Post Graduate Department of Law, Berhampur University was established in the year 1985. Research-oriented intensive full-time LL.M., Ph.D and LL.D Courses are offered in the Department.
The Department has successfully conducted different certificate and diploma courses viz. (i) UGC sponsored certificate course on Human Rights and Duties Education (ii) UGC sponsored P.G. Diploma Human Rights and Duties Education (iii) P.G. Diploma in Disaster Management.
Further, the Department has organized various National Seminars and legal awareness programmes to inculcate the knowledge of law among students, academia and common masses.
The Legal Aid Clinic of the Department established under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority, Ganjam, Berhampur caters the needs of the people of the vicinity in terms of legal assistance and advice.
The Department has brought many laurels in the past years. The students and researchers of the Department are well placed in corporate sector academics, judiciary, civil services and other Government services.

Programme
Master of Laws
Master of Laws course is a two years fulltime course. It is based on the choice based credit system as per the guidelines provided by the University Grants Commission and the Curriculum Development Centre of U.G.C. It is aimed to develop the legal acumen in-abreast with contemporary legal development and train the LL.M. students for future research. Master of Laws (LL.M.) is a fulltime two-academic years programme with four semesters. The first semester shall cover the period from June to December and Second semester from January to May in the first academic session. The Third semester shall commence from June to December and Fourth Semester from January to May in the second academic session.
The P.G. Department of Law currently offers Master of Laws course with specialization in Business Law and Human Rights Law.
Law graduates of 5 years integrated LL.B Course as well as three years LL.B course of Berhampur University and other universities (as considered equivalent by Berhampur University) can take admission into LL.M programme. Usually, the LL.M admission commences within fifteen days from the date of publication of LL.B results of Berhampur University.
Ph.D
Ph.D. Programme in law is for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years. The admission is done as per the University Research Eligibility Test (URET) followed by a viva voce examination. However, candidates who have qualified in the UGC-NET (including JRF) / UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) / SET / SLET / GATE/ Teacher-fellowship holder may be granted exemption from URET. However, such candidates have to appear in the Viva-Voce Examination . The PhD programme is currently regulated under the Berhampur University Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degrees Regulations, 2019.
LL.D
Berhampur University is one of the few Universities in India offering LL.D Programme. The programme is regulated under the relevant regulations framed by Berhampur University.

Chitta Ranjan Gogoi has been associated with P.G. Department of Law, Berhampur University since November, 2017 as Assistant Professor. He has published a number of research papers in leading peer reviewed and UGC-Care listed journals. He has participated and presented papers in a number of seminars and conferences. His research interest lies in health law, occupational health and Safety law, human rights and administrative law.

Dr. L R Patro completed his LL.M and received his Ph D degree from Berhampur University based on his doctoral thesis titled "Study of the legal implications of patents regime on public health" . He was appointed as Guest Faculty at Lingaraj Law College, Berhampur a constituent college of Berhampur University in the year 2007 .He has participated at the " Workshop on Bail Practice and procedure"�� at WISDOM institute, Berhampur. He contributed in a number of research projects and publications in addition to teaching. He has devoted himself to scholastic research and published a number of outstanding papers in different academic journals.

Ms.Spinita Priyadarshini holds her LL.B and LL.M degrees from Berhampur University. She has published a few research papers in reputed journals. Currently she is pursuing her Ph.D from Berhampur University. Her areas of interest lie in business law and criminal law.
Facilities
Facilities in P.G. Department of Law:
The P.G. Department of Law provides a conducive atmosphere for research. The R.P. Padhi Library has a good stock of reference books and textbooks on various subjects of Law as well as inter-disciplinary areas. The P.G. Department of Law has a Computer Lab for the use of the Students and Researchers. Apart from the Departmental computer lab, theR.P. Padhi Library has also a computer lab which gives access to different e-resources subscribed by the University. The Berhampur University to provide seamless access to quality e-resources has subscribed ProQuest, J-Gate database, Oxford University Journals, Cambridge University Journals etc. Apart from these, students and researchers can access various Online Educational Resources (OER) by using University's internet service.
The back volumes of Journals, as well as current journals on law and inter disciplinary areas, are available at the R.P.Padhi Library. The thesis and dissertation section of the R.P. Padhi Library is open for scholars and students for study.
Scholarship- The LL.M. students and full-time research scholars may avail various scholarship offered by Central Government and State Government of Odisha.

Research Area in the Department
The Department has contributed significantly to the society by conducting quality research. Social relevant research work is a feature of the Department from time of inception.Another significant feature of the Department is that scholars across the country have received Ph.D and LL.D degrees.
The main reasearch areas of the Department are Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, Constitutional Law,Business Law; Family Law Environmental Law.
Publication / Achievement / Credentials
The faculties of the Department ,Ph.D and LL.D scholars are continuously publishing research papers in reputed law journals. Further, they have authored book chapters and books. Publishing of the Edited Volumes after conclusion of seminars and conferences is a regular feature of the Department.

Seminar, Workshop, Training and Awareness Programmes-
Extension Lectures- Extension lecture is the continuous feature of the Department . The department has organized lecture programme by inviting senior-most academicians, lawyers, legal luminaries at regular interval.
Alumni
Alumni Association:
The Department has an alumni association of Ph.D Degree Holders . The first general body meeting of the alumni citation of Ph.D Degree Holders of Berhampur University was organized on 27th April, 2009. The association from its inception has been extending cooperation and support to the Department in promoting the cause of legal education and research. Besides, the association has organized seminars on different contemporary subjects inviting jurists and law professors across the country.
Further, alumni meet of the Master of Laws (LL.M) 1995-97 batch was organized on 25th December, 2018 in the Gopalpur PWD Guest House.
