About Department
The Department of Political Science came into being during the academic session 1968-69 with only 16 students on its rolls. During the last 54 years the Department has not only grown in its size but also expanded in its academic activities and research output. The Department has produced so far, 4 D.Litts., 68 Ph.Ds and about 250 M.Phils. Besides, about 550 dissertations have been produced by the M.A. students under the supervision and guidance of the teachers of the Department. The Department has successfully organised the All India Political Science Conference as well as many National Conferences/Seminars and Workshops. Moreover the Department has conducted many UGC-Funded Refresher Courses in Political Science. The Department received financial assistance from the UGC under its Special Assistance Programme (DRS). The Department follows Semester pattern of examination.
In the recent U.G.C-sponsored National Seminar on Indo-US Relations in 21st Century the top-notch U.S diplomat Mr. William H. Avery had graced the function and delivered the Key-note address. Besides, Professor Charles Borges of Maryland University, U.S.A in his visit to the department had interacted with the students and staff on the theme "Indo-Canadian Relations; A Paradigm Shift"

About Course Programme
Two-Year full time Master Degree Programme in Political Science is divided into four semesters.
How to Enter into the Course Programme
The students are admitted into M.A. Course on the basis of their career from HSC to Degree level. The total seats are 38. Due reservation has been provided to the candidates belonging to SC, ST, Physically Challenged, Bichhinaanchal and Sports category.
Class Schedule
Classes are held on the campus during six working days between 10.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. . Apart from regular classes, weekly seminars, Proctorial classes are held regularly.
M.Phil
About Course Programme
The M.Phil programme in Political Science is of one-year duration (Calendar Year). The programme is offered during every calendar year commencing from the month of January. There are 12 (twelve) seats in the programme of which 2 seats are reserved for ST candidates as against 1 seat reserved for SC category.
How to Enter into the Course Programme
The admission into M.Phil programme is done through an entrance test followed by a Selection Procedure including the viva-voce test. The notification for the M. Phil programme is normally announced in the month of October. The application form along with the prospectus can be downloaded from University website. (www.buodisha.edu.in).
Class Schedule
Class room teaching is offered 6 days a week between 11 AM and 4.30 PM for a Semester. The candidate have to appear at the Theory Examination and submit a dissertation prescribed in the Regulations.
Ph.D.
About Course Programme
As per the 2009 Regulations, candidates seeking registration for Ph.D in Political Science are selected through URET/UGC-NET/UGC-JRF. The Department provides an excellent environment for carrying out research, thus creating highly committed researchers trained in the most recent methodologies and engaged in producing original research work. The doctoral programme provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
The Department offers Doctoral programme in Political Science. Candidates seeking admission into the Doctoral course are required to possess an M. A. Degree in Political Science with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate. Candidates so qualified for the Research programme have to undergo a six-month course work and clear the same by securing at least 50% marks in each paper in order to become eligible to apply for registration.
How to Enter into the Course Programme
Candidates have to appear at University Research Eligibility Test (URET) to be eligible for admission in to the Ph.D. course work.

Class room teaching and guidance are held in the campus during all working days, as per the time table prepared for the purpose.
D.Litt.
One can register for D. Litt in Political Science as per the Regulations prescribed for the purpose by the University. D. Litt Course Programme provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Dasarathi Bhuyan passed his M. A. in 1989 and obtained his Ph. D. degree from Berhampur University in the year 2002. He has 31 years of teaching experience. His research interest includes Government and politics in Odisha. 11 PhD and 22M.Phil Scholars have been awarded under his guidance. He has published more than 74 research articles in various journals of National and International repute. He has participated in 52 national and international seminars both in India and abroad. He visited Georgia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia for academic pursuits. He is the author of several important reference and text books in political Science. He is a known poet, acclaimed story teller and an established columnist. Several Odia dailies carry his popular writings regularly.

Dr Rajesh Seth completed his M.A. from Utkal University and M.Phil & Ph.D from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Before joining Berhampur University in 2016, he was serving as an Assistant Professor in Political Science at Assam University Diphu Campus. Dr Seth has a keen interest in understanding the changing dynamics of Indian Politics, especially the interplay of State, Market and Civil Society in Post Globalized era.

Dr. Sharada Prasanna Rout joined as Assistant Professor in the P.G. Department of Political Science, Berhampur University on 23 June 2018. He has completed his M.A. in Political Science from Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Centre for Law & Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prior to joining Berhampur University, he has worked as a Lecturer and Head of the Department of Political Science in Science College (Autonomous) Hinjilicut, District- Ganjam, Odisha. His areas of interests are Disability Studies, Public Policy & Governance and International Relations.

Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Sambalpur University, Jyoti Vihar. Prior to joining Berhampur University, he has worked as Guest Faculty in different Degree Colleges under Sambalpur University, Odisha. Students of M.Phil are assigned to prepare dissertations for partial fulfilment of M.Phil Degree.

Every year Students have been conducting study tours and visiting different places of Political importance in order to gain practical knowledge.
Research
The department has so far produced 200 M.Phils. 60 Ph.Ds, and 2 D.Litts. In addition it has published around 250 papers in various National and International journals and around 50 books. The Department has received the Special Assistance Programme (DRS) of the UGC during 1994-1999. The faculty members have bagged many prestigious awards such as Fulbright (Junior & Senior), Commonwealth and numerous cultural exchange fellowships and have been conducting various projects sponsored by the UGC and ICSSR.
Events
Seminars and group discussions among the students on Coalition Politics, role of Civil Societies, Communalism in India, Evolution of Indian's Foreign Policy and its Determinants, Role of women in Panchayati Raj, Globalisation, Sino-India Relations, Women and Human Rights etc were organised during 2012-13 session. The discussions were monitored by faculty members. The deliberation and views forwarded by the M.Phil students and students of different semesters were given in an abstract form.

The Conferences of the Indian Political Science Association, Odisha Political Science Association (2010), were organized by this department. The Department has conducted three Refresher Courses in Political Science during 1992-95. Recently a UGC-sponsored National Seminar was organized by this Department during 19th and 20th January 2013. The theme of the Seminar was "Indo-US Relations in the 21st Century". Eminent Political Scientists from different parts of India like Prof. L.S. Rathore, Former Vice-Chancellor, J.N. Vyas University, Jodhpur, Prof. D.P. Singh, Former Member, UGC, Prof. K.M. Reddy, Former President, IPSA and Mr. William H. Avery, Former Diplomat, United States attended the Seminar. More than 60 participants attended the National Seminar to participate and deliberate on the theme of the Seminar.
