About Department
In the year 1986, Berhampur University offered the one year P.G. Diploma in Computer Applications as a sponsored programme of the Department of Electronics (DOE), Government of India. It was a major initiative taken by DOE to popularize computer education across the country. Later, in the year 1991 the Master in Computer Application programme was introduced with the joint sponsorship of UGC and DOE. Subsequently, in the year 1994 the Department of Computer Science was established as an independent department in the University. Since then the Department has played a very important role in imparting Computer education in the state of Odisha in general, and South Odisha in particular. It has produced many computer professionals who have established themselves in the field of education, research and IT industry both within India and abroad. In the year 2006, the Department widened its scope by introducing the two years M.Tech. programme in Computer Science under self-financing mode. In all these years, the unrelenting services of the qualified and dedicated teachers and professionally motivated students have been the strength of the department in imparting quality education. Besides teaching the faculty members are also engaged in research activities in different frontier areas of computer science, and in interdisciplinary areas. About 30 students have received their Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees from the department in different areas of computer science. In order to inculcate a sound academic ambience the Department regularly organizes seminars, workshops, and invited talks.
The students of the Department are also involved in different outreach activities to popularize computer education among the school and college students who are underprivileged to have access to technology and recent developments in ICT. In order to equip the non-computer science students of the University, the Department offered Add-on Courses on Computer Applications during 2014-16 in collaboration with NIRD & PR, Hyderabad.
Vision
To be the front runner in Computer Education and to equip the students with the best possible skill set in software development to excel in their professional career in a globally competitive environment and contribute to the society by harnessing software technologies in finding solution to problems, that benefit humanity.

About the Course
The MCA program spreads over a period of 2 years divided into four semesters. Each semester consists of theory as well as practical papers. The students have to undertake a major project work in the fourth semester. The MCA curriculum has been designed keeping in view the requirements of the IT industry and also to serve as a foundation for higher studies in computer science. It comprises of both theoretical and practical aspects of computer science and applications. The curriculum is a balanced blend of computer science, applications, mathematics, and management subjects. After successful completion of this course a student can join the IT industry as a system professional or pursue research in the core areas of computer science and applications.
How to get Admission into the Course
In order to seek admission into the MCA programme a student must be a graduate with a good academic back ground. Besides this a student should qualify in the Common Post Graduate Entrance Test (CPET) conducted by the Higher Education Department, Government of Odisha, details of which can be accessed at https://pg.samsodisha.gov.in
Class Schedule
The MCA programme comprises of Theory, practicals and software development projects. The classes are conducted between 10.30 am - 5.30 pm on all working days. The detailed time-table for the relevant semester can be obtained from the department office.
Ph.D
About Course
The Department offers Ph.D. in Computer Science in different frontier areas of research. After getting admitted to the programme a Ph.D. candidate has to undergo an one-semester course work as prescribed by the Department. The course comprises of two papers. The first paper is on research methodology which equips a student with the required knowledge to undertake serious research. The second paper emphasizes on some of the advanced areas of computer science namely, object oriented technology, database technology, network technology and service oriented computing. On successful completion of the course work a candidate has to submit a synopsis of the proposed research in consultation with his/her supervisor and complete other formalities for registration.
How to Enter into the Course Programme
Entry to the program is through University Research Eligibility Test (URET) conducted by Chairman PG Council, that is to be conducted once in a year, preferably in the month of November. Questions for the test include both objective and subjective type of questions covering the core areas of computer science at the Masters degree level.
D.Sc.
A candidate who already posses a proven track record of high quality research can register for the D.Sc. programme in Computer Science. He/She can carry out further research and submit a thesis with his/her research findings for adjudication.
