About Department

The PG Department of Library and Information Science aims to develope as one of the best departments in LIS education landscape to provide quality education and professional training through its qualified and dedicated regular faculty members.The department offers Master in Library and Information Science (MLISc.) and PhD in Library and Information Science. Following the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), the syllabus of the academic programmes have been designed primarily focusing on the students' employability. The department conducts student-centric activities, i.e. seminar presentations, technical writing skills, internships to libraries of repute, and library visits to sharpen professional and academic development. Besides, the course of the department is designed to prepare the students for an illustrious career in research, academia, and in the corporate sector.

Programme

The two years integrated Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Programme under Semester-cum-Choice Based Credit System is spreading over four semesters. Master of Library and Information Science is a professional postgraduate course that covers an advanced study of the principles and practices of Library Science and Library Administration and the current technologies involved therein. The program is designed to prepare students with a strong foundation in LIS and enable them to handle the modern-day libraries and information centers effectively. The program is intended to provide a master-level library and information technology-oriented curriculum that focuses on the practices, design, and development of information systems, databases & repositories to solve real-world problems. Postgraduates of the program are expected to take significant roles in planning, organizing, managing, designing, configuring, and implementing systems using state-of-the-art technologies within organizations. Apart from this, the course essentially includes the study of cataloguing and classification, collection development and management, information systems and technology, research methods, bibliometrics, preservation of information resources, reference and information sources and services, database management, digital library, e-learning, and knowledge management, etc. It also teaches students to determine the best technical solution and effectively utilize technology to add value to the field.

Dr. Jyotshna Sahoo, holds a Ph.D. degree in Library & Information Science from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. Currently, she is serving as an Associate Professor and Head in the Department of Library and Information Science, Berhampur University, Berhampur, Odisha. Prior to joining Berhampur University, she was serving as an Associate Professor in Khallikote University, Berhampur and as an Assistant Professor in Sambalpur University, Sambalpur. She has also worked as an Assistant Librarian of Odisha’s Premier Institutional Cultural Heritage, ‘Odisha State Museum’, Bhubaneswar for more than a decade. Her research interest include Preservation and Conservation of information resources especially palm-leaf manuscripts, Knowledge Organisation, Information needs and Seeking Behaviour, Bibliometrics, Open Access and Open Educational Resources. She has authored three books and 37 research papers published in different journals of national and international repute. She has been awarded with ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship in 2006 for her Ph.D. work and Junior Research Fellowship from Department of Culture, Govt. of India in 2007. She has successfully completed two ICSSR funded research projects namely “Mapping of Research Productivity in the fields Social Sciences in Odisha” and “Methodological Developments and Innovations in Social Science Research”. She has successfully guided 1Ph.D. student, 13 M.Phil. dissertations and 18 MLIS projects. Presently, six students are pursuing their Ph.D. work under her supervision. She is a Life Member of professional bodies like, ILA (New Delhi) IASLIC (Kolkata) and OLA (Bhubaneswar).

Raj Kishor Kampa is a multi-faceted professional with 14 years of experience in teaching, library administration, and management. He graduated from Sambalpur University, Odisha, with a honours in English Literature and obtained Master's Degree in English Literature and Library & Information Science from Sambalpur University, Odisha. He has also cleared UGC NET in LIS. Presently, he is serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science, Berhampur University, Odisha. Prior to this, he was associated with erstwhile Khallikote University, Berhampur, O. P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, New Delhi,  and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. His reseach interest includes , Knowledge organization, Elearning, Open source software, Open Access and Open Educational Resources.

Mrutyunjay Sethy is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science. Prior to joining Berhampur University he was served as an Assistant Professor in Khallikote University, Berhampur, associated with Institute of Mathematics and Application Bhubaneswar, and IIT Madras. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from Sambalpur University , He received his  M.Phil. degree from Sambalpur University and Master’s Degree in Library and information Science from North Orissa University. He has cleared his UGC-NET for Lectureship. He has attended more than fifteen National and International Conferences, Seminars and Workshops. He has also published about 2 articles in various International reputed Journals and also published 5 conference paper. His research interest areas are Human Resource Management in LIS, Scientometrics, Library Automation. Intellectual Property Right.

Mr. Desul Sudarsan is an Assistant Professor in the Information Science Area at Berhampur University. Sudarsan completed his Master Degree from the Pondicherry University in 2016 and B.Sc. (Computer Science) from Khallikote college in 2012. His research interests include ontology, sematic web services and scientometrics. His research has appeared in academic journals of repute such as ‘Journal of Academic Librarianship’, ‘Electronic Library’ and ‘Global Knowledge, Memory and Communication’. Before joining Berhampur University, Sudarsan worked as an Assistant Professor at Khallikote University in 2018-2021. Also, he served as a Junior Research fellow at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in 2016-2018 with his research focusing on ontology learning. Presently, He is pursuing his PhD from Tripura University. He teaches 'Information Storage and Retrieval System', 'Knowledge Organization’ and ‘Digital Library and Automation’.

Ms Shrutilata Mandal is currently serving as a Guest Faculty at the PG Department of Library and Information Science. Before joining Berhampur University, she worked as Library Professional Trainee at two national-level institutes, i.e. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela and Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar. She also worked as a Librarian at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Bhadrak. She completed his Master's degree & MPhil in Library and Information Science from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, in the years 2017 and 2018. She also completed one of the professional library courses, namely, PGDLAN (Post Graduate Diploma in Library Automation & Networking), from IGNOU, Bhubaneswar in 2020. She has qualified UGC-NET thrice in the years 2017, 2018 & 2019.
