About Department

The history of the Department of Environment Studies (DES) goes back to 2018 when the Department of Natural Resources Management and Geoinformatics (NRMG) was established in the erstwhile Khallikote Cluster University, Berhampur. Initially, the department had an interdisciplinary focus offering Master (M.A./M.Sc.) and Ph.D. degrees in Khallikote Cluster University. After the amalgamation of Khallikote University with Berhampur University, a major restructuring was carried out, however, maintaining the interdisciplinary nature of the course, the present Department of Environment Studies was created in the year 2021 in Berhampur University to be operational w.e.f. AY 2022-2023. Presently, this is the only University in the state which offers Post Graduate and Doctorate degree in the subject of Environment Studies. Odisha is bestowed with diversified habitats and natural resource base that not only supports to the sustenance of native denizens but also caters to many industrial activities within the country and beyond. Consequently, there is a vital need for a platform which would create awareness in the community regarding the conservation and sustainable development of the environment. Hence, the genesis for such a department was to produce skilled human-resource in the field of Environment and Sustainability through teaching and R&D activities, and to meet the aspirations of the state as well as the country.

Mission

  • To provide quality education in the field of environmental management, conservation science, environmental modelling, natural resource management and allied fields and produce skilled human resource.
  • To provide academic support to Post Graduate / Research programmes on the broad disciplines of Environment Studies.
  • To undertake cutting edge R&D projects in the frontier areas of environmental and ecosystem management, and organize workshops/ seminars / trainings and capsule courses to enrich the prospects of Environment Studies.
  • To provide technical services for EIA studies, Environmental Mornitoring, and also to extend environmental-analytical facility to various agencies / user groups.
  • To provide extension services to the user agencies in advisory capacity or by undertaking operational projects as service provider.
  • To provide intellectual inputs, and extension and outreach services to local communities and civil society organizations working on local and regional environmental issues.
